There are many different bird species that are red in color, however, there are very few birds that are predominantly red.  Here is a list of some of the amazing red birds in the world.

1. Vermilion flycatcher

The vermilion flycatcher is one of the black birds with the red chest that is mostly seen in North America. Male and female species differ in sense of color. The bird species has a unique singing voice that will help in strengthening their population. During mating season, males will put up an engaging dance in the sky to impress female species. They prefer to thrive in woodland areas, scrublands, farmlands, deserts, parks, savannas, shrubby areas, and even near water.

2. Scarlet tanager

The scarlet tanager is one of the black and red birds that belong to the Cardinalidae family. The body length ranges between 16 to 19 cm in length and the average weight is between 23 to 38 grams. The avarage lifespan of scarlet tanager is upto 10 years in years in the wild. The dietary habits are carnivores in nature and feed on insects, bees, wasps, hornets, moths, butterflies, beetles, cicadas, leafhoppers, spittlebugs, treehoppers, and scale insects.

3. Summer tanager

The Summer Tanager is a medium size songbird that belongs to the Cardinalidae family. The body length ranges upto 17 cm in length and the average weight is upto 29 grams. Initially, it was placed in the Tanager family, however, later it was moved to the Cardinalidae family because plumage and vocalizations are similar to other members of the family. The avarage lifespan of summer tanager is between 4 to 6 years. The primary diet consists of insects, especially bees and wasps. When they don’t find insects then they will feed on fruit and berries.

4. Pine Grosbeak

The pine grosbeak is one of the most beautiful red birds in the world that belongs to the true finch family, Fringillidae.  They are mostly seen in the regions across Alaska, the western mountains of the United States, Canada, and in subarctic Fennoscandia and across the Palearctic. The body length grows between 20 to 25.5 cm in length and the average weight is between 52 to 78 grams. The avarage lifespan of pine grosbeak is upto 9.5 years in the wild. The primary diet includes seeds, buds, berries, and insects. It is also listed as one of the brown birds with red head.

5. Red Warbler

The red warbler is a small passerine bird that belongs to the  New World warbler family Parulidae. The bird species are endemic to the highlands of Mexico and north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The body length ranges between 12.5 to 13.5 cm in length and the average weight is between 7.6 to 8.7 grams. They are mostly seen alone and sometimes in pairs and the mating season is in autumn of their first year and the pairs remain together year-round except during severe weather conditions. The primary diet consists of insects.

6. Scarlet Ibis

The scarlet ibis is one of the birds with long necks that can be easily recognized by the red color of the feathers. The red color of the bird comes from the crustaceans on which they feed. The primary diet consists of fish, mollusks, and insects. Talking about its appearance, the Juvenile species comes in greys, whites, and blacks across their body, however, the adult species comes in bright red colors and only the wing tips differ from the characteristic scarlet color being black. The avarage lifespan of scarlet ibis is between 16 to 20 years in the wild and upto 21 years in captivity. It is also listed as one of the tropical birds in the world.

7. ʻIʻiwi (scarlet honeycreeper)

The ʻIʻiwi is also known as scarlet honeycreeper and prefers to thrive in wet montane forests. Talking about their appearance, they have black wings along with long and curved bills. The younger birds have golden plumage and more spots and ivorybills. The mating season of the bird starts in the early winter in January to June and mates as the ʻōhiʻa plants reach their flowering maximum.  The largest population of the bird is on the East Maui and less than 1% of them is on Kauaʻi.

8. Pyrrhuloxia

The pyrrhuloxia also known as the desert cardinal is a medium-sized bird that is mostly seen in the  American southwest and northern Mexico. The body length of both male and female species ranges upto 8.3 in (21 cm) and the average weight is between 24 to 43 grams. The avarage lifespan of pyrrhuloxia is upto 8 years in the wild. The primary diet consists of seeds, fruits, and insects.

9. Hepatic tanager

The hepatic tanager is a medium-sized American songbird that was initially placed in the tanager family, however, now it is classified in the cardinal family (Cardinalidae) because plumage and vocalizations are similar to the cardinal family bird species. The primary diet of hepatic tanager consists of insects and berries. The body length is between 3.5 to 7.9 inches and the average weight is between 0.8 to 1.7 ounces. The avarage lifespan of hepatic tanager is upto 5 years in the wild.

10. Apapane

The ʻapapane is a small species of Hawaiian bird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Talking about its appearance, the bird species is overall bright crimson along with white under tail-coverts and lower abdomen feathers.  They are often seen in a tail-up posture by showing off their white feathers. The breeding season of Burd starts in Oct/Nov and peaks from February through June. The nest of ʻapapane is offendedly seen in the tree cavities and lava tubes as well as in the top of koa (Acacia koa ), kāwaʻu (Ilex anomala ), and hapuʻu (Cibotium tree ferns).
