Furthermore, the continuous extraction of water for agriculture and the intrusion of saltwater into the delta region are eradicating a portion of its natural ecosystem.

A comprehensive international study has pinpointed the Danube River as the most polluted in Europe, with the highest levels of antibiotics. The primary culprit contributing to its contamination is not only agricultural pesticides but also chemical waste, stemming from Serbian factories that were damaged during bombings in 1999.
