1. Red-headed Woodpecker

The red-headed woodpecker is a medium-sized black and red bird species found in temperate North America.  The body length ranges between 19 to 25 cm and the average wieght is between 56 to 97 grams. The average lifespan of red-headed woodpeckers is between 9 to 12 years. The adult species are identified as strikingly tri-colored along with a black back and tail and a red head and neck.  The underparts are mainly white and the wings are black with white secondary remiges. The dietary habits are omnivorous and feed on insects, seeds, fruits, berries, nuts, and occasionally small rodents and even the eggs of other birds.

2. Pileated woodpecker

The Pileated woodpecker is a large woodpecker species mostly seen in the forests of eastern North America and one of the popular birds with mohawks. The body length ranges between 40 to 49 cm and the average weight is 250 to 400 grams. The avarage lifespan of pileated woodpeckers is between 9 to 13 years. One of the black birds with red heads is seen across Canada, the eastern United States, and parts of the Pacific Coast.  The dietary habits are carnivores in nature and feed on insects, especially carpenter ants and wood-boring beetle larvae, however, it is also seen eating fruits, nuts, and berries, including poison ivy berries.

3. Scarlet-headed blackbird

The scarlet-headed blackbird’s scientific name is Amblyramphus holosericeus found in South American wetlands. The body length is upto 24 cm long. Males are slightly heavier than females where male weighs upto 86 grams and females wieght is upto 75 grams. It is very rarely seen flocks and is active during the day. The primary diet includes fruits, supplemented with seeds, insects, and other invertebrates. The avarage lifespan of a Scarlet-headed blackbird is between 2 to 4 in the wild and 13+ years in captivity.

4. Turkey vulture

The Turkey vulture belongs to the New World vultures and they have very few natural predators in the United States, it is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. The body length ranges between 61 to 81 cm in length and the avarice wieght is between 0.8 to 2.3 kilograms. The top speed of a Turkey vulture is upto 48 kilometers per hour and the wingspan is between 160 to 183 cm. The avarage lifespan of a Turkey vulture is upto 16 years. The primary diet includes animals such as small mammals to large grazers. It is also listed as one of the chaparral animals in the world.

5. Red-capped Manakin

The red-capped manakin is a bird species that belongs to the family Pipridae. They are mostly seen in the regions of Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Panama. It prefers to drive in tropical or subtropical moist lowland forests. The body length ranges upto 4 in (10 cm) in length and weighs 16 g (0.56 oz). The dietary habits of Red-headed manakin are frugivores and feed exclusively on fruits.  The exact lifespan of red-capped manakin is not known, however, evolution says that they might be able to live up to 10 or more years in their habitat.

6. Red-headed vulture

The red-headed vulture is an Old World vulture mostly seen in the regions of the Indian subcontinent. It is also known as the Asian king vulture, Indian black vulture, or Pondicherry vulture. The vulture species can grow between 76 to 86 cm in length and the avarage weight is between 3.5 to 6.3 kg. The vulture species prefer to thrive in foothills, river valleys, wetlands, and open country regions.

7. Crimson-headed partridge

The crimson-headed partridge is a bird species that belongs to the family Phasianidae. It was first described by the British ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1879 where it is the only species in the genus Haematortyx. The bird species are endemic to Borneo, where it inhabits the lower montane forests in the northern and central parts of the island.  Juveniles are duller and have the crimson restricted to the top of the head. The primary diet consists of berries, insects, and small crustaceans.

8. Red-headed myzomela

The red-headed myzomela is a small honeyeater bird species whose body length ranges between 12 centimeters and wingspan is between 17 to 19 centimeters. The bird has a compact body that weighs upto 8 grams. The adult species can be identified with a dark red head, neck, lower back, and rump; the red is glossy and reflects bright light.

The red-headed myzomela is widely distributed on tropical coastlines of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland. The feeding habits are arboreal feeding at flowers and among the outer foliage in the crowns of mangroves and other flowering trees. The lifespan of Red-headed myzomela has been found to be up to 7.1 years.

9. Crimson-crowned flowerpecker

The crimson-crowned flowerpecker is a bird species that belongs to the family Dicaeidae (Flowerpeckers). The bird species are endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.  The natural habitat includes tropical or subtropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. The population of bird species is still unknown in the wild but the assumption is that it is decreasing.

10. Red-headed malimbe

The red-headed malimbe is a species of bird in the family Ploceidae. It is most widely seen in the African tropical rainforest. The male species can be identified from the forehead to the upper back, with spurs creating a half-collar on the neck.  The female species can be identified with the forehead being black to the center of the crown. The Juvenile is like the female, with a paler bill and a brown forehead.

11. Scarlet-horned Manakin

The scarlet-horned manakin is a bird species that belongs to the family Pipridae. They are mostly seen in Venezuela and adjacent Guyana and northern Brazil. The natural habitat of bird species includes subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. The old Latin name of the bird species is Dixiphia cornuta, Pipra cornuta, and belongs to the genus Ceratopipra.

12. Crimson-hooded Manakin

Crimson-hooded Manakin is one of the black birds with a red head that belongs to the family Pipridae. They are mostly seen in the regions of Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. The primary diet includes small fruits (particularly of Araceae), insects and spiders. The body length is upto 11 cm and the average weight is between 14 to 18 grams. Talking about its appearance, the adult male comes with black plumage on the back, rump, wings, tail, and belly. The underwing and undertail feathers are black too.

13. Red-faced Barbet

The red-faced barbet scientifically known as Lybius rubrifacies is a bird species that belongs to the family Lybiidae. They are mostly seen in the regions of Burundi, Rwanda, Northwest Tanzania, and Southwest Uganda. They used to thrive in regions of equipped with dry savanna, moist savanna, and arable land. The body length can grow up to 17 cm (6.7 in) in length and it can be identified with the help of red coloring on the side of the face and around the eye, however, there is a black on the dorsal side of the head.

14. Scarlet Honeyeater

The Scarlet Honeyeater also known as scarlet myzomela is a small passerine bird family Meliphagidae native to Australia. The bird species was first described by English ornithologist John Latham in the year 1801. The body length is between 9 to 11 centimetres making it the smallest honeyeater in Australia. Talking about the appearance, the adult male comes with striking bright red with black wings, however, females are entirely brown. They are mostly seen in the regions of Cooktown in Far North Queensland down the east coast to Mitchell River National Park in Gippsland, Victoria.

15. Red-naped Sapsucker

The Red-naped Sapsucker is a medium size woodpecker growing between 13 to 21 cm and the average wieght is between 32 and 66 cm. Talking about the appearance, the adult male has a black head with a red forehead along with white stripes and a red spot on the nape. The breeding habitat of bird species is in mixed forests in the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin areas of North America where the nest is made in the cavity of a dead tree. Like other sapsuckers, they drill holes in trees and feed on insects attracted to them, howvever, they are also seen catching insects in flight and feeding on seeds and berries.

16. Red-breasted Sapsucker

Red-breasted Sapsucker is one of the black and white birds with a red chest initially considered the same as the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker and the Red-Naped Sapsucker, however, now these birds are placed into a distinct species in the Picidae bird family. The body size grows between 8 to 9 inches and the average weight is between 1.4 to 2.4 ounces. These black birds with red chests are mostly solitary creatures and are sometimes seen in pairs during the breeding season. The avarage lifespan of Red-breasted sapsucker is between 2 to 3 years.
