Animals do have big lips and one reason is to protect their mouths. The primary function of lips is to keep the dirt and other things out of the mouth and that will directly help the animal species to keep healthy. Here is the list of 16 animals with big lips.

1. Red-lipped Batfish

The red-lipped batfish is one of the fishes with legs that belongs to the family Ogcocephalidae. The body length can grow upto 8 inches and the average weight is less than 2 pounds. The dietary habits are carnivorous and feed on smaller fish, shrimp, mollusks, worms, and crabs. The avarage lifespan of red-lipped batfish is upto 12 years in the wild. They prefer to habitat in the reef or soft bottom of the ocean near the shore.

2. White Rhino

The white rhinoceros also known as the square-lipped rhino belongs to the family Rhinocerotidae. The large stack animal comes with two facial horns and squared lips. The body length is between 3.25 to 4.25 m long and between 1.7 to 1.9 m tall at the shoulder. The dietary habits are Herbivoreous in nature and feed on short grasses. The avarage lifespan of white rhinoceros is between 25 to 45 years.

3. Gourami

Gourami is one of the fish with big lips that belong to the families Osphronemidae and Helostomatidae.  The name is in the Indonesian language and it has been in use since the 19th century. The body length is between 1.5 to 24 inches and the average wieght is up to 20 pounds. The avarage lifespan of gourami fish is between 2 to 20 years. The fish is native to Asia and occurs in a range of colors and patterns.

4. Triggerfish

The triggerfish is a group of fishes that comes under the family Balistidae. As of now, 40 species of triggerfish are known and usually have unique oval-shaped bodies.  Talking about its appearance, they have large heads that narrow to small mouths and about one-third the fish’s length back from its mouth.  They usually prefer to thrive in shallow tropical and subtropical waters across the world. They have powerful jaws and feed on hard. Items such as crustaceans and mollusks.

5. Flowerhorns

The Flowerhorn are freshwater fishes and will not be able to survive in a saltwater environment. The tropical or semi-tropical fish belongs to the Cichlid family.   The fish species is believed to be originated from Thailand, Malaysia, and Taiwan in the early 1990s.  The first Flowerhorn strains originated by breeding different kinds of Cichlids such as Blood Parrot, Red Devil, and Tri Mac Cichlid. It is one of the most popular fishes in the world since they are quite hardy fish that do not catch diseases too often.

6. Orangutans

Orangutans is one of the beautiful orange animals that has a native habitat outside of Africa. The other great ape species are gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos. There are two species of orangutans, the first one is the Sumatran orangutan which lives on the island of Sumatra and the other one is the Bornean orangutan which prefers to live in Borneo.

The name of one of the popular forest animals orangutan comes from the Malay language and means ‘person of the forest‘. The meaning of the word  ‘orang’ is people and ‘hutan’ means forest. The avarage lifespan of an orangutan is between 40 to 45 years and up to 59 years in captivity. It is one of the animals affected by deforestation.

7. Proboscis Monkeys

The probosci’s monkey is a long-nosed animal species that is found on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Talking bout its appearance, they have a cream-colored face along with small and intelligent brown eyes. The type of monkey has a unique large nose that hangs lower than the mouth. The monkey species is diurnal and prefers to be active from late afternoon until dark. The monkey species are the most aquatic of the primates and come with webbed toes that enable them to swim long distances. It is also listed as one of the ugliest animals in the world.

8. Star Sapphires

Star Sapphires are one of Haplochromine from Lake Malawi at Kasinda and are seen along the shoreline between Makonde and Lupingu, Tanzania. Both males and females come in different sizes which can grow upto 10 inches and females are smaller in size and grow upto 6 inches maximum. They are peaceful species and have zero level of aggression, however, only males show aggression toward two other male species during the breeding season.

9. Napoleon Fish

The Napoleon wrasse is one of the fish with big foreheads mostly seen in the steep outer reef slopes and lagoon reefs in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. The species can grow upto 7 feet in length and the average weight is upto 420 pounds. The population of the Napoleon wrasse has gone down to fifty percent since 1980 because of overfishing, capture for the marine aquarium trade, and loss of habitat.

10. Big-lip Damselfish

The Big-lip Damselfish is one of the animals with big lips also known as the Big-lip Damselfish Kissing Damsel or Minstrelfis mostly seen in small schools in the branches of Acropora corals, over shallow, sheltered lagoons and coastal reefs. The body length can grow upto 6cm and at a depth of 1 to 3 meters. It is mostly seen in the Indo-West Pacific and feeds on coral polyps. The scientific family name of big-lip Damselfish is Pomacentridae.

11. Elephant Seal

The Elephant Seal is one of the strongest sea animals that spend nearly 2 hours under the water and dive to a depth of 7834 feet. Male species of elephant seal fight to prove their dominance and then get the opportunity to mate. Out of all elephant seals, only 1 out of 10 males is large enough to become alpha or beta males that are capable of reproducing. The alpha males have harems of 30 to 100 females and can successfully impregnate around 50 females per season. The pregnancy in elephant seals lasts for 11 months and ends with a single baby, which is born during the winter. It is also listed as one of the animals with big noses in the world.

12. Mandrill

Mandrill is one of the types of monkeys that live in large groups known as troops. There are two types of groups, The first one contains a dominant male, a large number of females, and their offspring. The second group carries a high number of males and females. These monkeys with red faces are noisy animals and communicate with the help of high-pitched sounds and grunts. The pregnancy in females lasts for 6 to 7 months and ends with one baby. The initial days the baby spends with his mother and when it becomes heavier, it will travel positioned on the mother’s back. It is also listed as one of the cutest monkeys in the world.

13. Platypus

Platypus is one of the animals with small eyes that mainly hunt and belongs to the group of carnivores (meat-eaters). The primary diet of these land and water animals includes shrimps and other small crustaceans, worms, and mussels. They do not have teeth so, grind food with the help of gravel and the pads in their bill. The animal species works with the help of knuckles when it is on the ground. The avarage lifespan of a platypus is 6 years in the wild and between 10 and 15 in captivity.

14. Gharial

Gharial is considered one of the coolest animals in the world since it comes with a distinguishing long and narrow snout. The male species can grow between 5 to 6.5 m, however, females are smaller and grow between 3.5 to 4 m. The primary diet includes a variety of insects and small-bodied press such as frogs. The adult species prefers fish as the primary source of food. They are found in North and East India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The avarage lifespan of gharial is upto 60 years in the wild.

15. Tapir

Tapir is one of the animals with long faces which is very important for ecological balance since they disperse seeds with their feces as they move from one location to another. The unique snout is a fusion of a combination of nose and upper lip. The primary use of the snout is to grab leaves from the nearby branches and even pick up fruit from the ground and find aquatic plants on the bottom of the water. They are usually seen in groups known as “candle” and like to spend most of the time in water since it cools them down and helps them in removing parasites.

16. Saiga Antelope

Saiga Antelope is a horned animal known for its long, thin legs and robust body. The most unique feature of saiga is its nose and the long humped nose covers the mouth. Horns are primarily used for fights during the mating season. The fights can be very aggressive and canned fatally. They are mostly seen in herds of between 30 to 40 animals and they consist of mostly females and males used to guard them. The main predators of saiga are wolves and humans.
